Don't do that!
I hope everyone had a great New Year's Day yesterday. I got in trouble. Because I did laundry. Yep. Laundry. Did you know there is a superstition about not doing laundry on New Year's Day? I'm not a superstitious person so I had no idea but I found out! If you do laundry on New Year's Day, it "washes" someone out of your life (they die). I checked around though and no one died so I guess I got by with it!
Here are some other New Year's Day superstitions that I had no idea about:
If you don't kiss your loved one at midnight, it sets the stage for a year of coldness. Kissing them means a year of love.
If your cupboards are bare on New Year's Day then they will be bare all year long. The same goes for your wallet.
You should pay your bills before January 1st to prevent debt in the New Year.
The first person to enter your home after midnight influences your whole year. It's best if this person is dark haired, tall and good looking. When they leave, they should leave by a different door than they came in. Blond and red haired people bring bad luck if they're the first to enter.
Nothing, not even the garbage, is supposed to go out of your house on New Year's Day.
Most people know that eating black eyed peas and collard greens bring good luck, but did you know that if you eat turkey or chicken on New Year's Day that it means you'll be scratching in the dirt for food all year long?
Do some kind of light work on New Year's Day to ensure prosperity but don't do hard work because that is unlucky.
Wear something new to ensure that you will receive new clothes during the year.
Avoid breaking things on January 1st or wreckage will be a part of your year.
Opening the doors and windows at midnight allows the old year to escape so the new year can enter.
Making a lot of noise at midnight scares away evil spirits.
In the morning of January 1st, the wind shows the weather for the whole year. If it blows from the north there will be bad weather all year. The south, good weather and prosperous times. The east, famine and calamities. The west, plentiful supplies of milk and fish but someone important will die. No wind means joy and prosperity for all.
And finally, if a baby is born on January 1st, they will always be lucky.
I did/didn't do several of those. I don't know if that's good or bad. How about you?
