For those of you that have hung out with me for a while, you already know what this post is about. For you newbies, well, I'm a little obsessed with death. Particularly famous death. Because of this, each year I write a post listing famous deaths of the past year. We lost some good ones in 2011. May they all Rest In Peace.

The ones we lost in 2010

This post is particularly hard for me because...well, because. I've had it written for several weeks. I was working on it the night of December 17th and we had the following conversation:

Tim: Whatcha workin' on baby?

Me: My list of famous folks who died in 2010. You know I do that every year.

Tim: Am I on there?

Me: NO. Quit that.

Tim: Well, I'm just saying.

Me: Well, quit saying.

Tim: K, love, just for you.

The next morning he had a major heart attack. We went to the hospital.

This list did not cross my mind again until the 20th. That's when I made the last entry, Steve Landesberg. I had come home to shower and get some fresh clothes. I went back to the hospital and the list once again left my mind.

Then, after also suffering a stroke, and fighting so hard, two days after Christmas my Love passed away.

Last night, while looking through things on our computer, I saw the list. I said to myself, just forget it. But then I remembered the conversation Tim & I had had about it and I decided that not only should I post it but I should include him on it. He deserves that honor. He was more important to me than anybody in the world.

This years list is not as "clean" as previous lists. I haven't done much editing to it. I normally add photos but I just can't bring myself to do that. Except for my husband. He gets his photo here.

R.I.P. Leslie Nielsen

I was so sad to read of Leslie Nielsen passing away yesterday. His "And don't call me Shirley" line has been said at least a million times in my different homes over the years. Over his long career (he began acting on TV in 1948), he appeared in over 100 films & 1,500 television programs. He died from complications of pneumonia. He was 84.






R.I.P. Lieutenant Drebin. You will be missed. 

R.I.P. Jill Clayburgh

I was going to write about Jill Clayburgh today. What a wonderful actress she was. What a strong woman she was. How she battled leukemia for 21 long years and then tragically lost the battle on the 5th. But then I found the following video. I think it says all of that very well. R.I.P. Jill Clayburgh. I'll miss you.

I was so sad to read about Tom Bosley, forever known to me as Mr. Cunningham, the lovable and wise dad on Happy Days, passing away at the age of 83.

R.I.P. Barbara Billingsley

Normally I don't post on Sunday's, but I couldn't let today pass without saying goodbye to a wonderful woman & actress. Barbara Billingsley passed away yesterday at the age of 94 just two months shy of her 95th birthday. She was probably best known for her role of June Cleaver in the 1950's family sitcom Leave It To Beaver. She will be missed. May she Rest In Peace.

R.I.P. Tony Curtis

Legendary Hollywood actor Tony Curtis passed away on September 29th. He was one of the most sought after actors in the 50's and 60's. In his personal life he was married 6 times and had 4 daughters (including actress Jamie Lee Curtis with his first wife, actress Janet Leigh) and 2 sons. He died of cardiac arrest at the age of 85. May he Rest In Peace.

He leaves behind children and their families who loved him and respected him and a wife and in-laws who were devoted to him. He also leaves behind fans all over the world. Tidbits

I thought today I'd just give you a few tidbits that are crossing my mind.

First, we lost two actors on the 11th: Kevin McCarthy and Harold Gould. 

Kevin McCarthy was 96. He died of natural causes. He acted in several movies including Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Death of a Salesman, The Misfits and Innerspace. He also appeared in several television shows.

Harold Gould was 86. He died from prostate cancer. He was a television actor known mainly as his roles of Martin Morgenstern on Rhoda and The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Miles Webber on The Golden Girls.

Speaking of television, it is the season for several of my favorite shows. 

Big Brother's season finale was on last Wednesday. Hayden, the 24 year old college student from Arizona, won the half million dollars. I wanted Lane to win but eh, what can I do? Nada! Actually if we really got honest, I would have liked to have seen Lane and Enzo in the final two and possibly Enzo winning. Ok, honesty, I slipped there for a minute...I wanted Lane to win it all!! Since I didn't talk about Big Brother this year, I guess I should leave it at that.

That same night, Season 21 of Survivor premiered. Woohoo! I really enjoyed it. They have the tribes separated into old (40 and over) and young (30 and under) and guess who is on the old tribe....

C'mon, guess...

I'll bet you'll never get it. 

Well, maybe if you're a big fan like I am you WILL...

It's JIMMY JOHNSON!!! Yes, the famous football coach Jimmy Johnson. Jimmy Johnson who coached both the Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins. Jimmy Johnson who is one of only two coaches to win both a college national championship AND a Super Bowl! I am psyched and can't wait to see how he does on the show! Although he is an older man now (67) and wasn't doing too well physically after setting up camp, I'm still hoping he does a great job! I'll just have to keep watching and see for myself. 

Of course, there is no problem with my continuing to watch. I've been a loyal fan since Season 1. I'll just have to remember that they've moved to Wednesday's.

Jimmy Dean, a legend in the country music world and just as well known for his sausage, passed away last night. He was 81. He will be missed.

Two more Hollywood deaths

It was a sad week for Hollywood and for me with the loss of two more people that I loved. 

First Dennis Hopper passed away on May 29th from complications of prostate cancer. He was 74. A story in the New York Times written by Manohla Dargis said this:

Dennis Hopper — actor, filmmaker, photographer, art collector, world-class burnout, first-rate survivor — never blew it. Unlike the villains and freaks he has played over the decades — the psycho with the mommy complex in “Blue Velvet,” the mad bomber with the grudge in “Speed” — he has made it through the good, the bad and some spectacularly terrible times. He rode out the golden age of Hollywood by roaring into a new movie era with “Easy Rider.” He hung out with James Dean, played Elizabeth Taylor’s son, acted for Quentin Tarantino. He has been rich and infamous, lost and found, the next big thing, the last man standing.

 May 17, 1936 – May 29, 2010

Then on June 3rd, Rue McClanahan passed away from a stroke. She was 76. Rue played the man crazy vixen Blanche Devereaux on The Golden Girls which ran on NBC from September 14, 1985 until May 9, 1992 and is still shown in reruns on WEtv and The Hallmark Channel. She also acted in several other shows including Maude and Mama's Family.  

 

February 21, 1934 – June 3, 2010

The Golden Girls has always been one of my favorite shows. I have all 7 seasons on DVD and ironically was watching one of them when I heard the news. With Rue's death, Betty White is the sole surviving Golden Girl. Estelle Getty who played Sophia passed away in 2008 and Bea Arthur who played Dorothy passed away in 2009. 

May they both Rest In Peace. They will be missed.

R.I.P. Art Linkletter & Gary Coleman and Get your story straight Steve Wilkos

I have several things I want to talk to you about today. First there were a couple of celebrity deaths that made me very sad. I don't talk about all the deaths that make the news but when they touch me in some way, I like to put them here.

Art Linkletter passed away on May 26. He was a radio and television personality and the host of House Party which ran for 25 years and People Are Funny which ran for 19 years. He died at home in California. He was 98. 

July 17, 1912 – May 26, 2010

Then yesterday Gary Coleman passed away. He played the role of Arnold Jackson on Diff'rent Strokes from 1978 to 1986. He was one of my favorite child actors. Even my great grandmother loved him on that show. She'd make us all be quiet when her "little devil" was on. He led a hard life including kidney transplants when he was very young, heart issues, financial issues and suicide attempts. He died from a brain hemorrhage resulting from a fall in his home. He was 42.

February 8, 1968 – May 28, 2010

May they both Rest In Peace.

Now I'd like to talk to you about something personal. I mentioned in my last post that I was upset with The Steve Wilkos Show. For those of you that don't know, Steve Wilkos started out on The Jerry Springer Show as security. He later started his own show. 

This is not a show that I watch. Honestly if I hadn't had a family member on the show I would never have watched it. That's right, I said a family member appeared on his show. 

And after watching the clip of the show that Holly was on I can tell you that this will never be a show that I watch.

Holly is my brother-in-law's daughter. When she was 16 she found herself pregnant by a 19 year old that was only interested in having sex with her. He didn't want to have a baby or keep Holly around.

His mother however very much wanted the baby. So she told many horrible lies about Holly and was believed. Holly was put out in the rain and not allowed to see her son Kris who was only 3 months old at the time. 

Over the past 17 years, Kris has been told all the lies about his mother and believed that she was worthless and tried to kill him when he was an infant. I don't blame him for believing the lies. He was never allowed to contact his mother to find out the truth. His grandmother kept them apart, telling him that Holly didn't want anything to do with him. Holly very much wanted to see Kris but she wasn't allowed.

So Kris, now 17, called The Steve Wilkos show because he wanted to meet his mother and find out why she supposedly did the things she did to him. Holly was given a lie detector test and she passed it, proving that she did NOT abuse her son or try to kill him. 

Here's where my anger comes in.

Steve Wilkos tries to act like he is this great guy that just wants to help people. His MySpace page says this:

"Many of the guests who come on my show are facing serious problems and are crying out for help from someone who has their best interests at heart," says the 6-foot-3 Wilkos. "I believe the morale code I was taught during my Marine training, the street smarts I picked up as a police officer, and the patience and compassion I have developed from becoming a father, has prepared me to help my guests get through the hard times they are facing."

Patience and compassion? Are those the qualities that made you refuse to let Holly even sit down? There is no way that you can tell me that you didn't know the results of the lie detector test before you read them to your audience. But you still treated her as though she were guilty until the end of the show. I guess ratings and sensationalism are more important to The Steve Wilkos Show than honoring patience and compassion.

They did not have Holly's "best interests at heart". I know she has hurt terribly for the past 17 years but I guess making the show exciting is what it's all about. 

That "morale code" you were taught is really shining through Mr. Wilkos. I am completely disgusted by your show now. I didn't know anything about it before Holly appeared on it and now I don't want to ever see it again. It's nothing but a place for you to try to look like a tough guy and fill your pockets while hurting people who don't deserve to be hurt. 

You can bet that this very large family and everyone else we know will never add to your ratings. If you want to bring the truth to people, get the whole story next time and don't make an entire show based on one person's lies. If you actually had the street smarts you claim to have, you would have done that. Shame on you.

Dorothy Provine dies at 75

I read this morning that actress Dorothy Provine passed away at the age of 75. She had emphysema. She was in the movies It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) and Kiss The Girls and Make Them Die (1966) as well as others. I found this TV Star Parade cover that she was featured on in June of 1961. May she Rest In Peace.

Dixie Carter passes away at 70

I was so sad to read about Dixie Carter passing away on April 10th. She was an actress most notably known as Julia Sugerbaker on Designing Women. To me she was always a lady. According to her husband, actor Hal Holbrook, Dixie passed away from complications of endometrial cancer. She was 70. She will be missed. May she rest in peace.

Munchkin coronor from Wizard of Oz passes away

I just read that Meinhardt Raabe passed away. He played the Munchkin coroner in the movie The Wizard Of Oz. That's one of my all time favorite movies and his scene and song is one of my favorite parts. I started singing it as soon as I saw his picture.





He was 94 years old. May he rest in peace.

Dynasty's John Forsythe passes away

I read this morning that John Forsythe passed away on Thursday, April 1st. He was an actor most notably known as Blake Carrington on Dynasty. He was also the always heard but never seen Charlie on Charlie's Angels. He died from cancer. He was 92. May he rest in peace.

R.I.P. Robert Culp

I just read that Robert Culp passed away. He was an actor in so many movies and TV shows that there are too many to list. He died after a fall at home. He was 79.
